Edinburgh Tattoo

First performed in 1950 as the army’s contribution to the Edinburgh Festival, the Military Tattoo has become a much-loved annual event, held for a period of three weeks in August on the floodlit Castle Esplanade. Whilst primarily a military display, it is a unique, colourful and exciting performance of military tattoos performed by the British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military marching bands in a dramatic evening setting high above the city.

Scottish Islands

Many of the islands of Scotland are just a ferry ride from the mainland, and with several of them grouped together, they are easy to explore. To the west are the Hebrides, while the Orkney and Shetland islands lie to the north. From those with a significant population to tiny uninhabited islands, each boasts its own unique character, with many having a history spanning back to the warring Scottish clans and all offering sheer natural beauty.

Royal Scotland

Scotland is steeped in royal history and culture and there are many places and attractions to visit. From Melrose Abbey on the Scottish Borders, where Robert the Bruce’s heart is buried to Balmoral Castle, which has been the Royal Family’s Scottish home since Queen Victoria was on the throne. The Queen’s View is worth a visit. This breathtaking vantage point in the Highlands is highly photographed and takes in Loch Tummel and the Tay Forest Park. Glamis Castle, former home of the late Queen Mother is also a firm favourite tourist attraction.

Lochs & Glens

There are thousands of freshwater lochs in Scotland, with famous Loch Ness and Loch Lomond being the largest. Head to Orkney to visit the twin lochs of Harray and Stenness, separated by a narrow causeway and rich in archaeology or Loch Morar in the Highlands, the deepest loch in Scotland. Meanwhile, Loch Tay offers stunning views across the water.

Scotland is home to dozens of stunning valleys, known as glens, and Glencoe is arguably the most famous with its surrounding mountain peaks, rivers and waterfalls. ‘The longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland’ is how Sir Walter Scott described Glen Lyon, while Glen Trool in Dumfries & Galloway offers beautiful forest walks.
